Day 1: Self Portrait

Going into this, I thought a self portrait would be simple. Just snap a picture of yourself with your front facing cell phone camera and call it a day. But the internet is flooded with Instagram mirror selfies and Snapchat captures, so I wanted to take it to the next level. After all, this does set the tone for the next 30 days. “How serious are you going to take this?” I asked myself. So I pulled out the Nikon D3200, my tripod, and the wireless shutter remote. The part I hadn’t thought about was how I was going to get in frame and in focus with no assistance. About 30 minutes and 45 shots in, I figured I had enough material that I could find something to work with. After a little touch up using CameraBag 2, this was the result.

  1. Pretty good. Seems a little dark and a hair out of focus, but I take it you’re shooting in “P” or Professional mode. The pose, however is spot on. I also assume you’re usung a kit lens, which doesn’t have a distance scale on it. Just so you know, on the d3200, the circle with the line through it somewhere around the “shoulder” on the left side of the body (going off memory rn), is the sensor plane mark. In addition to the diatance scale on the lens, using a tape measure to measure the distance between that marker and the subject will save you a lot of time in the future.

Please, tell me what you think...
